Slide On The Ice

When Magical Words asked me to write up a post for January, to go with the release of THE COLD EYE (Book 2 of The Devil’s West, ready for you to buy TODAY!), I suggested “writing the second book in an open-ended series and how to keep your sanity while doing it” as a topic.

There’s just one problem with that topic. I have no idea how to do it. I’m not even sure if it’s possible, honestly.

Seriously, I’ve done this “open-ended, multi-book series” thing three times now (four, if you count the novellas). And each time, I hit the same second-book Oh Fuck moment, that coal-squishing pressure of not only keeping everything straight and connected and clear from book one to book two, but also setting up threads to be used in books three, four, and five (and maybe six and seven too, if you’re keeping options open). […]

Laura Anne Gilman Comes To Visit

Laura Anne Gilman has a new book coming out in a few days (and it’s killing me to wait!) It’s the second in the Devil’s West series, called The Cold Eye, sequel to the marvelous Silver on the Road. We’re delighted to host her here on the blog today!

As some of you know, I work part-time at a winery tasting room here in Washington State – it’s a nice change from sitting alone in my office staring at my computer screen, only interacting with the voices in my head and the characters on the page, and the steady(ish) paycheck’s not bad, either. But it does mean that I tend to have a lot of open wine around the house. I mean, more than the average person who isn’t an actual indecisive alcoholic. So I challenged Misty – one day when we both should have known better […]

Why #HoldOnToTheLight Matters

You’ve heard the story about the boy throwing starfish back into the ocean at low tide. A man chides him that the boy can’t save them all, and what difference does such a futile gesture make? “It makes a difference to this one,” the boy replies, tossing another starfish into the sea.

Light one candle. Scare away the dark. Use your voice every time they try to shut your mouth.

The power of one. Refusing to go gently into the dark night.

Defiance is one of the human race’s better attributes.

#HoldOnToTheLight is about throwing starfish and lighting candles. And giving a one-finger salute to the darkness.

As my friend John Hartness likes to say, there is ‘famous’ and then there’s ‘writer famous’. ‘Writer famous’ is when you walk into a con and people recognize you. ‘Famous’ is when you walk into a Starbucks anywhere in the world […]

Write Us A Story!

Howdy, folks! I’m thrilled to announce that Emily Leverett, Margaret McGraw and I will be editing another anthology of stories from the dusty alleys of the weird west, this time for Falstaff Press! It’s called Lawless Lands: Tales From the Weird Frontier, and we have a fabulous lineup of anchor authors, including:

David B Coe Laura Anne Gilman Barb Hendee Faith Hunter Nicole Givens Kurtz Margaret McGraw Seanan McGuire Devon Monk Edmund Schubert and now, Jake Bible!

But nine stories isn’t enough, and that’s where you come in… we’re opening the submissions right now! Lawless Lands will be funded with a Kickstarter, which will run in December of 2016, so we want to have our stories in hand in order to guarantee an amazing campaign. We’re looking for stories that embody the frontier spirit of the American West, but with a weird twist. Gunslingers with laser pistols, cattle drives through […]

The Business Side of Bucking Trends

Folks, we once again welcome Laura Anne Gilman, author of Silver on the Road (Book 1 of The Devil’s West), a thrilling adventure set in an American West that isn’t quite ours, ruled by the Devil and watched over by Isobel, his Left Hand. It’s a wonderful start to what I expect will be an exceptional series, and I hope all of you have been able to score your own copy by now. Today Laura Anne presents a little chat about bucking trends.

Back when I first came up with the idea that would become SILVER ON THE ROAD, I sent it to my then-agent, asking “what do you think?”

Her response was that she loved it, thought it was great…but that it didn’t seem very commercial, and I probably should stick with what we knew was working, the urban fantasy. And because my then-agent was savvy […]

The World of The Devil’s West

Today we’re delighted to welcome back Laura Anne Gilman, who has just released her newest novel, Silver on the Road (Book 1 of The Devil’s West). I was lucky enough to get my hands on an ARC, and I promise, all of you are going to want to read it. It’s the story of Isobel, raised by the devil in the territory west of the Mississippi river and deputized to be his Left Hand, she who must be “the quick knife in the darkness, the cold eye and the final word.” Honestly, go buy your copy now. And while you’re waiting for it to arrive (or download), here’s Laura Anne to tell you how it all began.

Laura Anne Gilman: Rising From The Ashes

One of the questions I get a lot – having been doing this full-time for a decade now – is “Don’t you ever get tired? Don’t you ever feel burnt out from the constant need to produce?”

What they’re really asking is, “is that going to happen to me?”

For the longest time – years – I never ran out of things to write. There was always an idea fermenting, waiting for its chance. There was always an idea (or two) in progress, fighting for time in the chair. I was writing three books a year, and while I was more than slightly exhausted all the time, the stories kept coming. Long form, short… And then they all stopped. Nothing. Nada. Dead air.

I’d broken myself, I thought. I’d used everything up. I had nothing more to say. Every story I started, stalled. Everything I’d been working on went stale. […]
