Write Us A Story!

Howdy, folks! I’m thrilled to announce that Emily Leverett, Margaret McGraw and I will be editing another anthology of stories from the dusty alleys of the weird west, this time for Falstaff Press! It’s called Lawless Lands: Tales From the Weird Frontier, and we have a fabulous lineup of anchor authors, including:

David B Coe Laura Anne Gilman Barb Hendee Faith Hunter Nicole Givens Kurtz Margaret McGraw Seanan McGuire Devon Monk Edmund Schubert and now, Jake Bible!

But nine stories isn’t enough, and that’s where you come in… we’re opening the submissions right now! Lawless Lands will be funded with a Kickstarter, which will run in December of 2016, so we want to have our stories in hand in order to guarantee an amazing campaign. We’re looking for stories that embody the frontier spirit of the American West, but with a weird twist. Gunslingers with laser pistols, cattle drives through […]

Where Do Superheroes Spend Their Twilight Years?

Today we welcome friend of Magical Words Lauren Harris, who’d like to tell you all about an exciting project she’s heading. So heeeeeeere’s Lauren!

Hi! I’m Lauren Harris, IGMS Assistant Editor and author of the Millroad Academy Exorcists series. (You might remember me from a past post on MW, Eight Ways to HOKWOP.) I come to you today with an anthology and a Magical Words EXCLUSIVE giveaway! It’s my pleasure today to introduce a new anthology I brainstormed, ELYSIAN SPRINGS: ADVENTURES FROM THE NURSING HOME FOR AGING SUPERHEROES, which explores the twilight years of heroes, villains, and sidekicks in ten tales and one comic. The stories are both hilarious and heartbreaking as authors make the complex subject of aging accessible through the modern-day mythology of superheroes. It includes stories from MW’s very own Misty Massey, as well as authors like Gail Z. Martin, Tee Morris, Ken Scholes, and Jared […]

We Did It!

Y’all, I’m so proud and thrilled to say that The Weird Wild West Kickstarter funded successfully! If you were one of the wonderful backers, thank you so very much! We couldn’t have done this without you, and we’re so excited to bring you a book of incredible and thrilling stories soon.

But here’s the really good part…we managed to reach two of our stretch goals, which means that we’ll be opening SIX submission slots! We’re accepting submissions now, so if you have an idea for a great weird western story, now’s the time to write it, polish it, and send it to us.

All submissions should be in Times New Roman, 12 point, in .doc or .docx format. Stories should be between 3,000 and 9,000 words. No multiple or simultaneous submissions, and please, no reprints.

We seek stories of the Wild West in all its glory but with that delicious […]

Literate Liquors Episode 11

As our dear friend A.J. would say, “Bollocks!” Sorry I’m late today, life got away from me. I’m flying solo on this week’s Literate Liquors, but I’ll have a special guest next week. This week I’m pimping stuff by friends, in particular the Weird Western anthology that you may have heard Misty and I mention once or twice. I’m also promoting the Queers Destroy Science Fiction Kickstarter, not that it needs much help from me, since it funded within a few minutes. But it’s edited by the amazing Seanan McGuire (AKA Mira Grant) and is dedicated to giving voice to people all too frequently unheard in genre fiction. Gay rights and equality have been big issues for me for a long time, so I’m happy to support this KickStarter any way I can.

So Here’s this week’s Literate Liquors!

And Here’s a link to Queers Destroy Science Fiction!

The Weird Wild West Needs Homesteaders!

Hey y’all! I hope the holidays treated everyone well, and that you were fortunate enough to spend at least some of the time with people you like who like you back!

I’m back again to talk about our Kickstarter. We’re pleased that so many folks believe in us enough to pledge a little money, and we hope that we reach our goal so that we can bring you all some incredible stories. The first volume will feature thrilling tales by R S Belcher, Tonia Brown, Diana Pharaoh Francis, John Hartness, Gail Martin, James Tuck, Jonathan Maberry and me. But we’ll also have space for some of you!

If we reach our initial funding goal, we’ll offer up four open submission spots. We’re very excited to see what you all can imagine, but it will only happen if we reach that goal. You can help us along. Pledge if you can, […]

Things Other People Said

It’s holiday week at the Massey homestead, which means that I’m going to be going a little crazy for the next few days. I figured I’d do something else a little fun today…some of my favorite quotes from Westerns (weird and otherwise!)

Our Kickstarter is still moving along. We’re about 30% funded, which is wonderful. If you haven’t read down that far, I want to mention that if we can somehow manage to overfund our goal, we’ll be offering a second volume, featuring stories from our very own Faith Hunter, and friends of MW Barb Hendee, Laura Anne Gilman and many more. So if you haven’t shared the link around, please do!

One other bit of news…Emily Leverett, Margaret McGraw, Danielle Ackley-McPhail and I will be guests on tonight’s Talk of the Tavern podcast radio show! You can listen live tonight at 9 pm, or you can download the show […]

One week in, and the Weird Wild West Kickstarter is not only 22% funded, but was named a Staff Pick on the very first day! It’s going to be a great book – we have amazing writers lined up to craft stories for you – and if we can manage to fund for the second volume, we’ll have more stories by even more great writers!

Today I thought I’d entertain you with some interesting bits of information about the Wild West. This might be your chance to win at Jeopardy! Or even more likely, one of the following wacky facts might spark your ideas enough to get a story started. Did I mention that there’ll be open submission slots in The Weird Wild West if we fund successfully? There will be, so share the link with your friends!
