If I’ve Said It Once

It’s something we’ve said time and again here, but with a number of new folks coming along on the heels of the con, I think it deserves being said again. If you want to be a writer, you have to write.

Many years ago, when I had first started writing with an eye toward eventual publication, I had a friend who loved to tell me all about the novel he planned to write. It was going to be an epic saga spanning several volumes, with themes of love, patriotism and destiny. Kings and countries and armies and battles made up the canvas against which a tender love story would be displayed. And there was magic, too, although it’s been so long now, I really don’t recall if the magic was in the form of battle mages or something more private, between the lovers. Whatever. Anyway, he had maps drawn, and […]

It’s all about the timing.

A combination of factors in November reminded me of something important: writing is all about the timing.

By which I mean, it’s all about making the time to write, rather than having cleverly-timed one-liners or excellent pacing beats in your books (though those help too!). This past November, doing Nano, was the first time in ages that I had a specific word count I was trying to reach, and in order to do it I found myself sacrificing things I’d been too precious with to give up earlier.

Like sleep. Now, normally this is not my favorite thing to do, but my husband’s work schedule has changed so he’s getting up at 5:30 in the morning. Frankly, I’m pretty much awake once he’s up, so I might as well get up and write. And I can usually get in 1K in the morning before the baby wakes up, and that […]

“Butt in Chair.”

Over the past couple of years BIC has become something of a mantra here at Magical Words, and it remains some of the best advice we as a group have given. If you want to be a writer, you have to write. Simple as that. Or not. In fact, there is more to it than that, and I’m thinking about it this morning as I confront another blank post screen on the MW website. Writing professionally is not only about writing, but often about writing to a deadline, writing on demand, churning out content on a regular basis. Every Sunday, I write my Monday post for MW, and quite often it takes me a while to come up with a topic for my post. It’s hard, after literally hundreds of posts about writing, to come up with something original and relevant and, we hope, entertaining.

But as […]

Word Wars

I can’t remember if I’ve talked about word wars here before, so I think I will now. 🙂

Some years ago I was introduced to the concept, which is popular during Nanowrimo, if at no other time. The basic idea is that you and at least one other person log in to a chat room of some kind, set a timer, and write like crazy for 30-45 minutes on your work in progress (not in the chat window). Then you come back, report your word count, take a few minutes to stretch, and do it all over again.

The point of these wars is not to win, although the person with the highest wordcount gets accolades from the others, and at least half an hour’s worth of bragging rights. The point, mostly, is to be in a group of others all pursuing the same goal–getting the words on the page–and […]

I’m feeling very much the way Faith must have the other day. I’ve got nothing to say this morning. I have no idea what to write for this post.

I’ve been thinking about distractions lately, mostly because I seem to be very much aware of all of the things lying around my house that call to me while I’m trying to write. The slow drain in our bathroom that I’m perfectly willing to ignore all weekend long, but which becomes A Problem That Must Be Dealt With Now once the work week begins again. The pictures from our trip out West that I did work on over the weekend but have yet to finish processing. Converage of the Democratic Convention, which is Everywhere right now and which is quite a pull for a political junkie like me.

The deadline for my current WIP is close enough that I’m aware of […]
