For those of you in the U.S., today is the day we celebrate our forefathers coming across the Atlantic to star in D.B. Jackson’s novels and eat turkey. Or it’s the day where you try to get out of washing the dishes to watch football. Or maybe it’s the day that you still have to sit at the “kids’ table” even though you’re forty.

But anyway, for those of us in the US, this is Thanksgiving, a day when we take a minute to rest, look around at the carnage we just unleashed upon our diets, and give thanks for the stuff we have. So I’m going to take a minute and talk about things I’m thankful for this holiday season, and give you a couple of chances to make things thankful for other folks while you’re at it.

1) I’m thankful to be over bronchitis, which laid me low all of last week. I was sick as a dog, and it sucked, and while I still have a cough, which I expect to have for a while yet, I’m over the worst of it and feel much better.

2) I’m thankful to have new books coming out and new stuff under contract, so I’ll keep my nose to the grindstone. Big Bad 2 is still open for submissions, go to my site to check out all that info. Capes & Clockwork is a superhero steampunk anthology that will come out in the very first part of 2014 with one of my Bubba stories in it. And of course, it’s time to get cranking on Book 5 of The Black Knight Chronicles

3) I’m thankful to have been asked to participate in Writers for Relief, Vol. 3, alongside such greats in our field as Kevin J. Anderson, Todd McAffrey, Ben Bova, Eugie Foster and others. All proceeds from the sale of the book will be divided between those affected by the Oklahoma tornados last summer and the massive typhoon that just struck the Phillipines.

4) I’m thankful for my readers, and my writing support network, both here on MW and in real life in Charlotte. You guys are awesome!

What are y’all thankful for this holiday season?

  • Okay, the whole thankful thing. Yeah, I’ve got some bad going on, but it could always be worse. Here’s 10.
    1. I’m thankful for having a roof overhead. It’s a cold, drafty roof that leaks in spots, but it does keep the rain off where it counts.
    2. Thankful for my family, my two ladies, my parents, and good friends.
    3. Thankful that I’m signed to be published and will have my first non-RPG work out mid 2014.
    4. Thankful I’m alive to say what I’m thankful for.
    5. Thankful for my talents, my writing ability, my artistic ability, cooking ability.
    6. Thankful I’m not sicker than I am.
    7. Thankful that my body has held out this long, even though it means ignoring pain.
    8. Thankful for my fortitude and will to endure pain, even if I do complain about it.
    9. Thankful to be able to lend a hand to others in whatever way I’m able.
    10. Thankful for the sweet, sweet Russian water of life. 😉

I am not, however, thankful for going back to a job I said I’d never do again, because 6, 7, and 8 may change if I have to push myself too much. Still, it’s a paycheck, a tiny one, but I’ll at least be able to buy some shoes and pants, and make the holidays a little better. And just like the Dude, I abide.

  • Thanks for the opening line, John. That cracked me up.

I am thankful for my family. For health and happiness (knocking on wood). For all that my parents did for me while they were alive; without them, nothing I have today would be possible. For my friends and colleagues, in particular the wonderful community we have here at MW. For a career that may not pay a lot, but that allows me every day to do what I love, to create, to stretch and challenge myself. For the creature comforts my family and I are fortunate enough to enjoy. For a natural world that I worship and revere, and that never ceases to fill me with awe. For a country that drives me nuts more than half the time, but which is still a nation I love, founded on principles I am proud to embrace. For music and art and literature and drama and dance and all the creative endeavors of others that inspire.

Hi John! Great post! There’s a lot to be thankful for (in no particular order):

    – I can see, and I can read. 😀
    – The great books that came out this year and the incredible authors who wrote them!
    – The great books due out next year that I’m so looking forward to!
    – My family, the people and the pets
    – All the strange people in my head who take me on such weird, wild, crazy-making adventures 😉
    – Making progress on a physical condition that grabbed me this year but is now slooooowly getting better
    – The doctors and physical therapists who are helping me
    – The loveliness of the green earth, the sky, and everything in them
    – This website!
    – My day job. Yes, there’s too much drama and the business has seen better days, but as long as it keeps chugging along, I’m thankful for it.

    Happy Thanksgiving, everybody!

  • Loved this post! Since it’s Monday morning, I’m thankful that I had lovely Thanksgiving with my inlaws. That the shopping I did on Friday late afternoon was peaceful. Thankful that I’ve got friends and family and a great writing community. Thankful for all the blessings I’ve got.

  • John, I am thankful for all the friends here at MW.
    Hugs all around!

  • I am thankful for snagging a laptop computer on Black Friday which will allow me to write at home now instead of just at work.
